| Tamarac was a fledgling senior retirement
community in the early 1960’s, when a young
millionaire named Ken Behring came to South Florida
from the Midwest and bought up all the land of what
today is the city of Tamarac and then started to
build. He originally made his fortune in the carwash
business, with the dealerships called Caramat. He
called his new city Tamarac, Caramat spelled backwards,
and the name remains.
Tamarac is located in the western portion of
Broward County, in the heart of the South Florida
cultural and business climate. This central location
makes Tamarac a key city for business, leisure
and recreation. Since its incorporation in 1963,
Tamarac has prospered and grown into a full service
city. Tamarac is 12 square miles and the approximate
population of the city is 56,444. The city’s
projected population at build-out is over 60,000.
