| Palm Beach Gardens was incorporated
in 1959 by wealthy landowner and insurance magnate
John D. MacArthur. On March 20th of that year, he
announced plans to develop 4,000 acres and build
homes for 55,000 people. He chose the name Palm
Beach Gardens after his initial choice of Palm Beach
City was denied. He had a plan for a “garden
city” so he altered the name slightly. MacArthur
envisioned the city streets lined with trees and
flowers. Millions of dollars were wisely invested
to create a community with hundreds of waterways,
rolling terrain, magnificent mature pine and shade
trees, and rich foliage. Because Mr. MacArthur was
a lover of trees and Mother Nature, he instructed
that city streets and construction go around trees
that had been growing there for many years. This
made for an expensive proposition but he wanted
to build a city that was entirely new and unblemished.
Since the arrival of the Professional Golfers’
Association of America, in 1965, the city has
billed itself as the Golf Capital of the World.
Several PGA tournaments were hosted in Palm Beach
Gardens in 1971. In 1999, the John D. and Catherine
T. MacArthur Foundation sold approximately 5,000
acres in the City of Palm Beach Gardens. This
land was developed quickly and there is much new
growth in the city.
