Down through the ages, humankind
has struggled with the problems of providing shelter and comfort for
itself, exploring alternatives, from the cave to the castles to the
pre-fabricated home and more. This quest has evolved the noble art
of architecture. And along the way, a few architectural achievements
have stood out as milestones, touching and influencing everything
around them and after them. In every era, it has been the privileged
few who have enjoyed access to excellence in architecture and building:

most luxurious materials and the finest craftsmanship.

title of America's Best Builder. This award is co-sponsored by Builders
Magazine, the industry's largest trade publication. Recipients were
selected for excellence in all five categories: product design, finance

American
Traditional: Inspired by the graceful temples of Greece
and Rome, the American Traditional home is often characterized
by a formal facade of tall pillars supporting a covered
front porch. Its symmetry and proportions radiate balance
and harmony in quiet dignity. There is often a central hall
with a graceful stairway and balusters. Another favorite
feature is a grand fireplace, ornamented with delicate moldings.
Many exquisite examples of this style can be seen in Charleston.
As we enter the 21st Century, this popular design is still
the "classic" American estate home.

British
Colonial: In the days when the sun never set on the British
Empire, this eclectic style evolved from the comfortable
Victorian look which Her Majesty's colonist took with them.
Embellished with both Classic and Renaissance elements,
it is an ingenious blend of architectural styles native
to the colonies, usually with tropical climates. Very popular
were lush brightly colored gardens, scarlet bougainvillea
cascade from balconies, and fountains of cool splashing
water. Today, when tranquility is rare, British Colonial
is a refreshing alternative. The West Indies offer many
excellent exmaples.

French
Manor: The French Manor style was brought to the U.S. by
Americans returning from World War I, who had fallen under
the spell of the beautiful homes of the French countryside.
These elegant homes were eminently livable, growing as the
family did, which led to a series of connecting wings. Their
simple, rich ornamentation, with vertical dimensions, expressed
in steeply pitched roofs and gables, projects a bold exuberance,
often translated into colorful tones. The unique charm of
this style is quintessentially French. The Burgundy region
reveals many striking exmples.

The
Floridian: In the Deep South and Coastal states, particularly
Florida, early settlers created unique styles to keep their
homes as comfortable as possible in the warm, humid climate.
The ground floors were raised. Deep porches and verandas
were added to create a cooling shade around and under the
home, as well as a lovely spot to sit out of the sun. High
ceilings allowed the heat to rise and made for an airy,
open atmosphere. French doors and full length windows took
advantage of every breeze. For prime examples, see the older,
upscale residential neighborhoods of Key West.

Mediterranean:
Although Florida was home to the Spanish, America's first
European settlers in the 1500s, the state wasn't really
developed until the 20th century. The Spanish influence
of St. Augustine still remained, but architects like Addison
Mizner wedded it to Italian elements and created something
uniquely American. Colorful, low-pitched barrel tile roofs,
richly textured stucco walls, and numerous columns and arches
are all signatures if the Mediterranean style. First introduced
in the early 1900s, this style is still popular in South
Florida. For many fine old examples, see Coral Gables, The
City Beautiful.
